Sexual Dysfunction Q & A

What is sexual dysfunction in men?

There are two main types of sexual dysfunction in men:

Erectile dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is described as the inability to get, or maintain, an erection long enough to have intercourse. ED is both incredibly frustrating and exceedingly common, especially as men age — 40% of men in their 40s report problems compared with 70% of men in their 70s. ED is often the result of outside problems, such as cardiovascular issues, stress, and diabetes.

Loss of libido

Testosterone is the hormone in control of a man’s sex drive and when these levels are low, it can cause a loss of libido.

What causes sexual dysfunction in women?

While there are many physical, emotional, and mental problems that can lead to sexual dysfunction among men and women, the main driver among women is the inevitable passage through menopause.

When women pass through menopause, their ovaries begin to shut down, which are the main producers of estrogen and progesterone. During a woman’s reproductive years, these hormones govern the health of their sexual organs, including their vaginal tissue. With the sudden drop in these hormones, it can lead to thinning and dry tissue, and, ultimately, painful sex.

How is sexual dysfunction treated?

When you come in to see Dr. Zaidi, he first sits down with you to review your symptoms and your medical history. With men, especially, the doctor wants to make sure that sexual dysfunction isn’t a symptom of a larger problem. If that’s the case, by addressing the bigger issue, men may be able to resolve their sexual dysfunction.

Once your doctor has an idea about what’s causing your sexual dysfunction, they recommend one of several treatments, which include:

  • Prescription medications for men that help with erections
  • Estrogen creams for women to boost vaginal health
  • Hormone replacement therapies

In addition to these treatments, lifestyle changes can also have a big impact on sexual health. Rest assured, the doctors work with you until a satisfactory solution is found for your sexual dysfunction.
