PRP Q & A

What is PRP therapy?

Your blood contains four ingredients:

  • White blood cells
  • Red blood cells
  • Platelets
  • Plasma

While your platelets play a key role in clotting your blood, they also contain hundreds of proteins, or growth factors, that boost healing. When you’re injured, your platelets work to stem the flow of blood and then they release these growth factors to prompt a healing response.

With PRP therapy, your doctor draws some of your own blood and then separates out your platelets in a centrifuge, creating a concentrate that’s 5-10 times stronger than normal. They take this concentrate, mix it back in with your plasma, and inject it into areas that can use a regenerative boost.

How can PRP help with aging skin?

The doctors at Integrative Primary Care offer microneedling combined with PRP to restore health to aging skin. Microneedling is a technique in which the doctor runs a special tool over your skin that creates tiny microchannels. These “injuries” spur a mild healing response, including collagen synthesis, which works to strengthen and smooth your skin. Taking this technique one step further, the doctor adds PRP therapy to speed up the healing and regeneration process.

The end result is that microneedling with PRP offers a one-two punch that rebuilds your skin from the inside out, giving your skin more tone and elasticity, which smooths out the wrinkles and fine lines that come with age.

How can PRP help with hair loss?

Another area where PRP therapy has found use is in fighting hair loss. Hair loss is common among men and women, especially as they enter middle age. To give your beleaguered and aging hair follicles a boost in resources, the doctors at Integrative Primary Care use PRP therapy to increase the blood supply to your hair follicles, keeping them active and healthy. The goal is to help you develop new hair growth and prevent further hair loss.

Most patients require three PRP treatments for effective results, with maintenance treatments every six months or so to ensure that your hair follicles continue to receive the necessary resources for healthy growth.
